Course Overview

Sand accumulated on the east side of the Ohoopee River for centuries. Ultimately, Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner were given this dream site upon which to build an original design. Their own sense of aesthetics complemented the rustic site’s color palette of browns, rusts and tans. The result is a low-profile design that beguiles. Be careful of its short par-4s: the 4th, 9th and 14th all tempt with driver off the tee — and punish rash tactics. The course isn’t overseeded, and the release of the ball across its dormant fairways allows the first-class architecture to shine. It also signifies the owner’s high golf IQ. (Photo: Jon Cavalier)

  • Hole everyone talks about

    Four of them, actually. Ohoopee is a 22-hole layout, with two separate routings depending upon the desired length and difficulty. Those extra four holes form what is called the “Whiskey Run” course, a 5,600-yard design that maximizes fun and quirk. If you haven’t played the Whiskey Run, well, you just haven’t visited Ohoopee.

  • Best non-golf amenity

    Perhaps the logo, which represents the course’s original heritage as an onion farm. But those who have visited Ohoopee insist the real treat is either the housing — a series of well-appointed but quaint one-bedroom lodges that dot the course — or the food, which onsite chefs spare no expense in artfully preparing.

  • Insider tip

    The shorter of Ohoopee’s two routings, the “Whiskey Run” course, has a bottle of Woodford Reserve tucked into one of the tee markers. Players are encouraged to take a shot of the brown stuff before beginning their round in earnest. Bottoms up!
